“Find the right job,” Jen Soch from GroupM
Nov 30, 2022Meet Jen Soch, Executive Director, Channel Solutions at GroupM. She focuses on helping clients expand their campaigns into different channels, including audio, which is one of her favorite mediums (obvs ours, too). She sees audio as a powerful, more personal way to reach target audiences.
Jen stopped by our podcast booth at Advertising Week New York last month for a quick Pass the Mic interview. She shares her philosophy on leading people to the right job and encourages us all to raise our hands for more challenges. Listen and learn—you won’t be sorry.
Find the right place.
“I love for kids to call me in a college and say, ‘I'm really trying to figure out why no one will call me back with this resume,’ or ‘I've gotten this call back. I don't know if it's the right spot for me. Will you talk me through it?’ I would rather help them find the right job in the right place than have them be miserable for a year or two in the wrong job. And I say that people work with me now.
I mean, I've had people leave my group to say, ‘You know what, I really want to go run a bridal store.’ Okay! I mean, great! I mean, hopefully you've learned something from the media, and you can use social media and promote your store someday. Or, you know, ‘I really want to go travel the world,’ or ‘I need to do this.’ Fantastic! Call me on the other side. Let me know how it went. Let's talk about it. But I would rather people just talk about their life and their journeys so they're happy, and so that I can, you know, encourage them in the right way, too.” – Jen Soch
Raise your hand.
“It was definitely be there, right. Raise your hand for new business pitches was probably one of the better pieces of advice I've gotten. Even when you are killing yourself and working 18-hour days. Saying to someone, ‘Oh, you know what? I'd be happy to stay with you and do that.’
Challenge gets you introduced to new people, higher up people, gets you off what you're doing so other people can see who you are. So I am very much of the hand-raiser society. If you are interested in trying something new in my department, I'm all for it. I'll move you from one area to the other with no problem. Just tell me what it is you want to do, why you're interested in doing it. And I think if you put a little bit of effort into it, learn a little bit about it, you can do amazing things.” – Jen Soch
We’re glad we were in the right place to receive and share Jen’s great perspective and advice. Raise your hand if you’re ready for more inspiration. You’re in luck! There’s more Pass the Mic content waiting for you.
